Admission requirements – good to know

Application for the specialized master 'Global Futures: Development, Sustainability, Social Justice' is open for students with a Bachelor's degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology / Ethnology or Geography. Students with a bachelor’s degree from a related field (sociology, political science, religious studies) or, for example, in earth system sciences (Erdsystemwissenschaften) or area studies, are also welcome to apply to the program.

The study program can accept a maximum of 20 students per year. The first decision on admission to the study program is made by the Program Committee.  There is no entitlement to admission. Our Program Committee will assess your application individually. Be aware that students without a specialisation in Social Anthropology / Ethnology or Geography may obtain additional requirements from the Social Anthropology / Ethnology or Geography programs. These requirements are defined sur dossier. The scope of the requirements is a maximum of 48 ECTS credits. We expect applications to have good evaluations of academic performance with subject-relevant content and excellent English language skills in order to be able to read, discuss and write at an academic level.

Enrolment is possible only in the Fall semester of each academic year.

Admission process

The application and selection process for the candidates takes place in two stages:

  1. Academic Assessment Stage
    To apply to the program, you need to submit the following documents through the online portal under ‘Apply Now’ until 28 February, or until places are filled:
    • Certificate of BA degree
    • Transcript of records
    • letter of motivation that shows how you are a good fit for this MA program, including information on your academic interests, where possible, experiences which connect to the thematic orientation of the program, and other relevant information.
    The program committee may invite you for an interview to assess your suitability and motivation for the specialized Master's program. In individual cases, the program committee may waive the interview.
  2. Administrative Assessment Stage
    Once you have received a provisional confirmation of admission from the Program Committee the UZH Student Services will notify you of the next steps.
